Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The 2015 Mayote is quite youthfully tight-knit, unwinding in the glass with spicy aromas of dark currants, blackberries, bay leaf and cracked black pepper. On the palate, it's rich, full-bodied and chewy, but the structure is ripe and matched by good concentration and juicy acids, so the only missing ingredient is time.
- Jeb Dunnuck: There’s were three 2015s that had been in barrel during my visit last year which are now in bottle. The 2015 Mayote is a unique blend of 42% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, with the balance Petit Verdot. Now in bottle for close to a year, it offers a dense, concentrated, age-worthy profile as well as classic notes of blackberries, ground pepper, dried herbs, and graphite.
Producer Information
Founders George and Daniel Daou began searching for the vineyards that would comprise the DAOU estate in the mid 2000s - their objective was to find the perfect terroir for producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. They eventually settled on an estate in the Adelaida District AVA in San Luis Obispo County, specifically a plot once singled out by oenologist André Tchelistcheff as being of great potential. It's rare to find high quality Cabernet Sauvginon in Paso Robles, rare even to find anyone vinifying the grape here, but the high altitude of the site combined with a forensic approach in the vineyard and winery have allowed the team at DAOU to produce some truly fantastic wines. The flagship Cabernet Sauvignons are dense, intense reds that are set to age for many decades. Mayote is a Cabernet Sauvignon / Syrah blend while the estate Chardonnay is a surprisingly elegant entry in the portfolio.
