Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: Sporting a slight name change, the 2015 Val d'Arno di Sopra Bòggina A is amphorae-aged Sangiovese. Previously, this wine was named BògginAnfora. The Petrolo winemaking team follows the same procedure in which grapes are sourced from a single vineyard that was planted in 1952. The wine remains in contact with the skins for a long six-month period inside traditional clay vessels. The wine opens to a lean garnet-dark ruby color. The bouquet is fragrant and bright with wild berry and cassis. The mouthfeel is lean and tight.
- James Suckling: Very perfumed aromas of plum, dried berry, cedar, and flower. Full body, with velvety tannins and a juicy finish. Love the texture and richness to this wine. Fascinating smoky undertone. Amphora gives it a life and energy of its own. No wood. Drink or hold.
Producer Information
Petrolo is the definition of a cult winery, with an owner and a story that have helped create its legendary status. While the estate's benchmark wine, the Merlot cru Galatrona, deservedly receives fireworks in the press and is part of the history of Tuscany’s quality revolution in the late 1980s and 1990s, the winery's two other standouts, Torrione and Boggina, are an equally thrilling success - Sangiovese from a special and virtually unknown appellation bordering Chianti Classico that today produces wines of distinct regional identity.
