    Detailed Description

Deep garnet-purple colored, straight away you know this is no ordinary Touriga, giving up a VERY spicy nose of Sichuan pepper, Chinese five spice, cumin and cardamom with a core of blackberry preserves, redcurrant jelly, bouquet garni, dusty soil, lavender, leather and tobacco. Full-bodied with a taut, tightly wound frame of chewy tannins, it is jam-packed with expressive layers, finishing very long with lingering fragrant earthy hints. Just 100 cases were made.

    • Wine Advocate: Coming entirely from the Krankl’s “Home” vineyard—the Cumulus vineyard—the 2016 Touriga Nacional Numero Dois is a blend of 83% Touriga Nacional, 9% Mourvedre, 5% Syrah and 3% Petite Sirah using 54% whole clusters. It spent around 33 months in French oak barrels, 33% new.
    • Vinous: The 2016 Numero Dois is full of mystery and sheer allure. Mocha, wild cherry, mint, iron and a touch of new oak infuse this opulent red with tremendous nuance. Soft curves and rich, voluptuous fruit add to the wine's considerable personality. Time in the glass brings out the wine's intense aromatics and overall nuance. The 2016 is flat out gorgeous. That's all there is to it.

    Producer Information

Sine Qua Non has its own winemaking facility in Ventura, California not far from the Santa Barbara vineyards where the fruit is sourced from. In the last few years Manfred and his wife, Elaine, have begun creating their own vineyards dedicated to Rhone varietals. Their winemaking philosophy is to work in very small batches, gravity flow, natural yeasts (unless a fermentation problem is anticipated), long lees aging for the whites and repeated racking for the reds to open them up. This is a modified explanation of a very dedicated and artistic approach to winemaking. The wines are simultaneously very rich and elegant, superbly balanced and thoroughly harmonious with food, never overwhelming.
