Herbal and chalky, this full-bodied wine is surprisingly bright in acidity, helping to quell the rich notions of blueberry, red cherry and cinnamon. The oak adds additional spice and vanilla, weaving easily within the dense layers of texture and tannin.

Yao Family Wines is a small Californian wine brand established by retired Chinese NBA Hall of Fame basketball player Yao Ming. Its focus is Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from vineyards throughout the region's sub-appellations. Yao Family Wines does not own any vineyards – all grapes are sourced from local growers. The grapes are fermented separately by site before being blended and then aged in French oak barrels. The label has focused on the Chinese market and in 2015 was the best-selling premium California wine brand by value in China. In 2016, Yao Family Wines opened a tasting room in St Helena. The inaugural 2009 vintage was launched in 2011. The brand started with two Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons, a core Yao Ming bottling and the Yao Ming Family Reserve. A more affordable red blend called Napa Crest was added in 2013; a white wine from Sauvignon Blanc is also made under that sub-brand. The range has further expanded to include Yao Ming Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings from Howell Mountain, Oakville and Rutherford. A Yao Ming Family Table blend is priced a little closer to the Napa Crest wines. It is based on Syrah, Petit Verdot and Zinfandel with a little Cabernet Sauvgnon. Yao, a 7 feet 6 inch center, is the son of two Chinese former professional basketball players. He entered the 2002 NBA Draft was picked first overall by the Houston Rockets, and played for them until his injury-forced retirement in 2011.
