      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: Sporting a new label design, the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino represents a philosophical divide from previous vintages. In the past, Castiglion del Bosco was focused on soft and immediate Brunellos for near-term consumption. Despite the warm conditions of the 2011 growing season, this wine shows far more elegance, nuance and grace than I expected. This massive property is comprised of various vineyard sites for more blending possibilities. The bouquet is redolent of wild berry, cola and grilled herb. The tannins are silky but long in terms of persistence.
      • James Suckling: Plenty of dried-fruit and strawberry-jam aromas. Full body with round, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Sultanas. A flamboyant crowd-pleaser.

      Producer Information

Castiglion del Bosco is a Tuscan producer in the northwest of the Montalcino appellation. It cultivates an estate of entirely Sangiovese for its Brunello and Rosso de Montalcino wine portfolio. The Bosco property covers 2000 hectares of land with 62ha (153.2 acres) of vineyards planted entirely to Sangiovese. The vines are divided into two distinct plots – the 20ha Gauggiole vineyard and the 42ha Capanna vineyard. An elevation between 250 and 460 metres (820 to 1509 feet) allows for wind penetration into the canopy as well as a diurnal temperature shift to encourage ripening. Prima Petra is Castiglion del Bosco's second estated, located on the Tuscan coast. It has 11 hectares (27 acres) planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The estate has a long history stretching back several centuries, apparent in many of the structures still standing on its property. It has also been influential in the history of wine in Montalcino, being a founding members of the Consorizo del Vino Brunello di Montalcino in the 1960s. The organization was formed to promote the wines of the region and regulate quality when the region achieved DOC status. In 1972, the surrounding Val d'Orcia region came to the attention of the World Heritage Committee and Castiglion del Bosco and its historic estate became a World Heritage Site.
