It offers up rich notes of red plums, cherries, blueberry coulis, sage and savoury, chocolatey oak. On the palate is succulent richness, with a fleshy, mouth-watering core, leading to exceptional concentration and length of fruit on the finish.

• Christian Eedes: The Series M 2015 is being eased into the market and it’s sure to please its many fans. A blend of 40% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Malbec, the nose shows black and blue fruit, incense, cocoa powder plus a touch of black olive and earth. The palate is rich and smooth textured – these wines are always about fruit power and this is again extraordinarily dense and deep although it somehow doesn’t sacrifice all balance and refreshment value. A wine of great technical acumen, it would be churlish not to like it.

Producer Information

Vilafonté is a South African wine producer, located in the Stellenbosch wine region on the bench of the Simonsberg mountain range. It produces a portfolio of wines source entirely from the estate property. The flagship range is a duo of Bordeaux blends; Series C and Series M. The former a Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc dominant blend whilst the latter is Malbec and Merlot dominant. Both are blended for longevity and barrel-aged in a combination of new and used French oak barrels. Seriously Old Dirt is the company's second label, named after the ancient soils of which the estate is planted on. It is thought to be one of the oldest documented soil types, with relics of stone age cutting tools discovered on the estate thought to be between 1.4 and 1.9 million years old. These nutrient deficient soil types stress the vines to reduce yields and produce concentrated flavor compounds in the grapes. The 42 hectare (103 acre) estate has a cooling maritime mesoclimate thanks to the proximity to both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Here, wet, cold winters and long dry summers create ideal terroir for viticulture. The company was co-founded in 1997 by local Mike Ratcliffe and Californian natives Zelma Long and Phil Freese.
