Hints of dark chocolate and leather laced with black pepper are identified immediately, but there is an intriguing floral and black cherry character that lingers with plum. The typical savory Rutherford dust is present, yet there is a freshness, a creaminess, and a sweetness of fruit that adds richness.

Sullivan Rutherford Estate, formerly known as Sullivan Vineyards, is a boutique wine producer based in Rutherford, in the center of California's prized Napa Valley wine region. In keeping with many producers in the area, Sullivan makes a range of wines with a primary focus on Cabernet Sauvignon (and Merlot). The property was established by James (Jim) O'Neil Sullivan, a graphic designer and avid home winemaker, in 1972. For decades the winery sold to loyal customers and friends, remaining – in its own words – "relatively undiscovered". Jim Sullivan died in 2004 and the winery continued under family ownership until 2020 when it was acquired by Juan Pablo Torres-Padilla, the former CEO of a Paris-based Artificial Intelligence company. The Sullivan estate boasts 26 acres (10 hectares) of vineyard, initially planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with the latter progressively giving way to the former. Since 2018, however, eight acres (three hectares) of Cabernet has been replanted to Merlot. Sullivan Rutherford Estate produces a range of wines with the J.O. Sullivan Founder’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon heading up the offering. The Sullivan Rutherford Estate line comprises a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Rosé and a Chardonnay.
