2018 | Thibault Liger-Belair | Les Saint-Georges

A wine that has a wonderful substance and fine-grained, elegant tannins revealing pure fruit. On the nose, the quality of the terroir comes through: beautifully defined, mineral-driven, hints, black fruit. Lovely focus. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannins, dark berry fruit laced with white pepper, merging into a finely structured and persistent finish.

Reviews:

• Decanter: Thibault Liger-Belair has produced one of the tighter, more serious expression of this celebrated Premier Cru in 2018, finding texture, tannin and structure in his 74-year-old plantings. Hail halved the crop here, which may have been a bonus as far as quality as concerned, because this has real poise, balance and intensity with spice and tobacco notes and underlying minerality.

• Jasper Morris: Volume reduced by the hail, down by 50%. Planted 1944 and 1946 but with substantial replacement of missing vines after 2009. Rich crimson, clear cut nose, extra pure fruit, magical density. Spicy, excellent whole bunch component (40%) with terrific density. For the moment there are slightly dry tannins but this is heading in the right direction.

Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair is a highly regarded Pinot Noir producer located in Nuits-Saint-Georges in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, France. The Marey and Liger-Belair families have been involved with the vineyards, sale, and trade of Burgundian wines for well over a century, but it was not until 2001 that Thibault Liger-Belair created Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair to exploit the family's historic and noteworthy vineyards.Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair's portfolio of domaine wines (vineyards owned by the estate) covers ten wines from six different appellations, including Vosne-Romanée (the Richebourg Grand Cru and Aux Réas), Vougeot (the Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot), Nuits-Saint-Georges (Premier Cru Les Saint-Georges and the La Charmotte site) and Gevrey-Chambertin (the La Croix des Champs vineyard). The estate also makes a Bourgogne Aligoté.
