A lovely mossy lift gives an ethereal edge to pristine, ripe but tart red cherry fruit. The palate comes in with a firm but graceful structure and a spine of both ripe, slightly grippy and superfine tannin and vivid, mouth-watering freshness.

        Producer Information

Akitu is a highly-acclaimed wine producer in the Central Otago region of New Zealand. Located in Wanaka, it makes several red wines and, unusually, one white, working solely with the Pinot Noir grape variety. The name Akitu in the Maori language means summit or apex, reflecting the vineyard's altitude. (It is also a Japanese girl's name and a Babylonian festival connected with harvest and sowing, and the arrival of a new year, but these were not the basis for the choice.) After spending a great deal of time deciding on that name, the winemaker's shorthand designations A1 and A2, were used for the two principal wines. The single 12-hectare (30-acre) plot was planted entirely to Pinot Noir in 2002. It lies at 380 meters (1250ft) against the alps, in one of the southernmost wine regions on Earth. The extremes are tempered by a prime north-facing sloping site. There are six sections with clones of Pinot Noir chosen to suit soil composition and aspect. The vines were allowed to develop for a decade before the first Akitu wine (the 2012) was made.
