        Reviews:

        • James Suckling: It’s hard to believe that this pinot noir is from the Mosel, because of the spot-on ripeness of the cherry fruit, the subtle rooty character and the silkiness of the tannins. Beautifully integrated oak. Already delicious, but surely has many years ahead of it. Drink or hold.
        • Falstaff: Spicy and herbaceous nose, some lovage, cherries, blueberries and smoky notes, a hint of vanilla far back. Appealing character that moves confidently on the palate, with good extract and substance in a firmly built structure, fleshy tannins, fine mineral base, shows profile and will continue to grow.

        Producer Information

Maximin Grünhaus is a German wine producer located in the Ruwer district of Mosel. It is best known for its famous monopole vineyard, the Maximin Grünhaus estate. Fifth-generation family member Dr. Carl von Schubert has managed the estate since 1981. The first documented evidence of the Maximin Grünhaus vineyards dates to 966, when the land was given to the Benedictine monastery of St. Maximin in Trier. Various winemaking artifacts from Roman times including pruning knives and amphora have been discovered here. The three sites that compose Maximin Grünhaus – Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg – have distinct micro-climates, gradients, soil compositions and classifications, from the smallest and lesser of the sites, Bruderberg, to the equivalent of a Grosse Lage, Abtsberg. Riesling makes up over 90 percent of the total vineyard plantings followed by Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois and Spätburgunder. The estate produces some 15,000 cases of wine annually, including Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein from its three vineyards, as well as some Spätburgunder, Pinot Blanc and Sekt wines.
