The Bachtobel Castle Estate has been family-owned since 1784 and combines historical buildings, forest, vineyards and meadows into a unique and valuable unit. Viticulture has been practiced for eight generations and the current top position of Bachtobler wines is due to the constant striving for the highest quality. We cultivate our vineyards according to Bio Suisse guidelines. Roman finds in the Bachtobel, as in the rest of Thurgau, are nothing unusual. In the Middle Ages, the castle of the Barons of Oberboltshausen probably stood on the site of the manor house. The two Torkels from 1584 and 1729 are witnesses to an old winemaking tradition. In 1784, Johann Ulrich Kesselring bought the Oberboltshausen or Bachtobel estate from the Ebinger Junkers. While the landowners primarily devoted themselves to law, politics or finance, the tenants, together with farmhands and vineyard workers, took care of agriculture and viticulture. At the beginning of the 20th century, Hans Kesselring set his life's goal of turning the Bachtobel into a model estate with a top Eastern Swiss wine. Thanks to progressive management and the use of the latest technology, such as the first cable winch in vineyards around 1928, the foundation for today's wine quality was laid. The properties and wines were particularly strongly influenced by the character and work of Hans Ulrich Kesselring (1946 – 2008). He was a cultured, subtle thinker and a relentless, razor-sharp analyst. He appeared modest and yet was careful to ensure that his outstanding knowledge and achievements were seen and mentioned not only in oenological circles. As Hans Ulrich Kesselring's successor, his nephew Johannes Meier is now running the business at Schlossgut Bachtobel in the eighth generation. He is supported by his long-standing team consisting of the oenologist Ines Rebentrost and the two winemakers Philipp Gfeller and Fazli Llolluni. According to Vinum and Gault & Millau, Schlossgut Bachtobel is one of the 100 best wineries in Switzerland and is a member of the renowned winegrowers' association Mémoire des Vins Suisses.
