This one, a 17 year from That Boutique-y Whisky Company (TBWC) is the fifth batch of Benrinnes from the bottler. In fact, they’ve just released a sixth batch of über expensive 26-year, so I’m actually glad I got to try this (slightly) more affordable one. The 17 is bottled at 47.6% ABV, which is fairly low for a cask-strength whisky, implying a lot of loss to the angel’s share. There’s precious little info on the website or online, so all I can do is guess that this is ex-bourbon (by the color), and the age tells us that this was partial-triple-distilled. Batch 5 is a release of 940 bottles.
Benrinnes 17 Year Old – Batch 5 Single Malt Scotch Whisky Tasting Notes
Nose: Lemon tart, barley and vanilla. Hints of hazelnut and honey-roasted peanut.
Palate: Still quite nutty (now with walnut, almond and more hazelnut). A juicy burst of Sauternes wine sweetness.
Finish: Lingering florals.
Distillery Information
Benrinnes is a malt whisky distillery in Aberlour producing an eponymous whisky. It was founded in 1826, and is still active. The distillery employed a unique partial triple distillation process until 2007. The first time whisky was produced at the site of Benrinnes distillery was in 1826, when a distillery was founded by Peter McKenzie. This distillery was destroyed by a flood in 1829, and was rebuilt in 1835[3] in the outbuildings of a farmhouse[4] by John Innes, and officially founded under the name Lyne of Ruthrie.
