Detailed Description
Detailed Description
Oak-forward and earthy, the nose is dominated by dark cigar wrapper, leather, grain bin, and dry autumn leaves, with overripe peaches and plenty of toasted pecan and walnut lurking just beneath. The palate is full-bodied and chewy, yet displays the softness you’d expect from such a well-aged wheater, as the flavor marries alluring caramel-and-maple sweetness with mixed nuts to achieve perfect balance.
Distillery Information
Old Fitzgerald is a brand of wheated Straight Bourbon produced by Heaven Hill Brands in Louisville, Kentucky. It was one of the few alcohols to continuously be distilled throughout Prohibition period of the 19th Century. John E. Fitzgerald's "private label" was introduced in 1870 and soon became the favoured drop of the railroad and steamship barons. It was made more widely available in the USA and Europe from 1900, and was one of the few pot still whiskies available. During Prohibition, the Fitzgerald whiskey was distilled under government supervision for the national medicinal trade. It is also said to have been a favorite at the White House during several 20th Century administrations. Soon after Prohibition ended, Old Fitzgerald was bought by Pappy Van Winkle for $10,000. He introduced "a whisper of wheat" to the original recipe, in place of the more traditional rye, to give it a rounder, softer character. For some time it was the main wheated style on the market, but in the second half of the 20th Century, had to compete with Maker's Mark and the Pappy Van Winkle whiskeys. Old Fitzgerald was produced at the Stitzel-Weller distillery until 1992, when production moved to Diageo's Bernheim Distillery. Diageo sold the brand and the distillery to Heaven Hill in 1999. The brand's flagship whiskey is Prime, bottled at 40 percent abv (80 proof). While Old Fitzgerald has the historical reputation of having a higher wheat content than other Bourbons, Prime shares the same mashbill as other Heaven Hill wheated Bourbons – 75 percent corn, 20 percent wheat and 5 percent barley. It also uses the same barrel char levels. The John E. Fitzgerald Very Special Reserve is a 2015 release from a dozen 20-year-old barrels distilled at Stitzel-Weller. There are several other Old Fitzgerald products on the market that are either special releases or have been discontinued, including the 12 year old, the 50 percent abv (100-proof) Bottled-in-Bond and the 1849 releases based on the original John E. Fitzgerald mashbill.
