Single barrel rye is quite a treat. Well-aged rye is also quite a treat. This, faithful reader, is a well-aged single barrel rye, which I suppose makes it a treat². It comes to us via Smooth Ambler's outstanding Old Scout range, and was matured in a single cask for 12 years before being bottled at cask strength - a particularly punchy 55.9% ABV. Ought to be incredible stuff.
Smooth Ambler Old Scout 12 Year Old Single Barrel Rye Whiskey Tasting Notes
Nose: Dried fruit and cinnamon stick, shortly followed by tobacco, orange peel, dark chocolate and baked earth.
Palate: Caramelised pecans, salt and pepper crisps, baked apple and thick marmalade, a kick of ginger and more cigar box richness.
Finish: Five spice and barrel char, though still enjoyably fruity and bright.
