      Producer Information

Fattoria della Aiola is an Italian producer located in the village of Vagliagli in the Chianti Classico subregion of Tuscany. Approximately 800 years ago, the estate was a historic fortress but today, it is home to the Aiola portfolio of Chianti Classico and IGT Toscana wines. The first mention of the Aiola Fortress dates back to the 14th Century when it was was at the center of the conflict between the two rivals of Siena and Florence. A significant earthquake in 1911 destroyed all but 10 of the 39 rooms of the palace of which remained in a state of despair until 1935 when it was purchased by Giovanni Malagodi. Malagodi invested heavily into the estate and today, the property includes an extensive cellar and multiple estate vineyards throughout the Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda municipalities. Estate vineyards cover approximately 36 hectares (89 acres) of undulating hillsides. This landscape provides multiple microclimates suited to viticulture with altitudes ranging between 250 to 480 meters (820 to 1574 feet) above sea level. Sangiovese is the principle variety although Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a small selection of white grape vareties are also cultivated. The range of Chianti Classico DOCG wines are all produced with 90-percent Sangiovese to which Colorino and Merlot are added in varying parts depending on the vintage. The Chianti Classico DOCG Reserve is the flagship wine of which spends 24 months barrel-aging prior to bottling. The range of Toscana IGT wines are produced from the above varieties as well as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Fattoria della Aiola has been a member of the Chianti Classico Consortium since 1947.
