        Reviews:

        • James Suckling: Very youthful, cool and pristine, this is an extremely elegant sleek and focused Kabinett. Although analytically there must be quite a bit of unfermented grape sweetness here, you barely feel it, so uplifting is the mineral freshness that drives this joyful Saar riesling. Very long finish.
        • Heiner Lobenberg: Cool, very classic Scharzhof nose, somewhat reserved, subtle and reserved, only very fine nuances of light rock, flint and even some chalk dust. Then, in delicate hints, a white, radiantly clear citrus nuance, shell. Hardly any fruit, the ultra-classic, cool and closed Scharzhofart is back, perhaps reminiscent of 2016 in this rather delicate, elegant way. The residual sugar is very moderate at 35 grams and you can tell that on the palate, because it tastes almost dry for a Kabinett , maximum in the finely dry, almost dry range. Only white, crystalline, predominantly European fruit, granny smith and apricot, transparent and extremely polished. Only at the back does a bit of acid peak kick in, but also comes rather balanced and with a certain finesse, by no means robust or hard. The vibration is less of a trumpet solo like it was in 2019, more of an underlying, slightly thumping bass, but still providing an exciting mineral texture.

        Producer Information

Weingut Egon Müller is a renowned wine estate based just outside the village of Wiltingen in the Saar valley sub-region of the Mosel in Germany. It exclusively works with the Riesling grape, and is particularly known for its wines made from the exceptional Scharzhofberg vineyard southeast of Wiltingen. The current manager is Egon Müller IV, who studied his craft at the leading winemaking university at Geisenheim. The Egon Müller wines are produced at a range of ripeness levels, including Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese, with Auslese Goldkapsel (literally "gold capsule") made in the best years. If conditions allow, sweet Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein are also produced. The estate in its present form dates back to 1797, when Jean-Jacques Koch acquired the Scharzhof farm from the French republic. His daughter married Felix Müller, and the estate has remained in the same family ownership ever since. Egon Müller also produces top-class Riesling with Miroslav Petrech in Slovakia under the Château Belá label. In the Adelaide Hills region of Australia he collaborates with Michael Andrewarta of East End Cellars to make the dry Kanta Riesling from a vineyard owned by Shaw + Smith.
