Dominant warm colours, saturated and full of life (orange, blue, cocoa, fruit), communicating a warm, ripe, delicious citrus fruit. Extreme tension of the fabric, partly masking its notorious thickness under the lemony lustre, the twirling voluptuousness, the very soul of Jurassic limestone. Energy comes immediately, lively like an uppercut, compact and fruity. It takes off from the seat and sends it into an ascending orbit, ample and of great potential.

• Anne Krebiehl: Citrus richness emanates from the nose of this wine that holds ripe, almost honeyed, pear as a base. On the palate, concentrated, chalky and honeyed richness is rounded, textured, off dry and fluid. The wine has citric drive at its core and a certain coolness, despite the honeyed, full-fruited richness, creating a lovely contrast. Texture and structure are gilded by fruit.

• Wine advocate: From Jurassic limestone soils, the 2015 Rotenberg is nicely clear but still marked by its long fermentation. It is pure, fresh and pretty stony on the nose, which leads to a medium-sweet, very round and elegant Riesling-driven wine with tropical fruit aromas and a lot of finesse. The finish is beautifully salty and even pure—it shows fleshy but highly delicate fruit.

Producer Information

Marcel Deiss is a French wine producer located in the small village of Bergheim in Alsace. The Deiss family have been growing grapes in the region since 1744 with the domaine established in 1947. Today, the Deiss vineyards are planted to Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Muscat are produced as varietal wines as well as traditional field blends. The domaine covers 32 hectares (79 acres) of vineyard land planted on hillsides that spread over multiple communes. This includes land in the Mambourg, Altenberg de Bergheim and Schoenenbourg vineyards, all of which are produced as blends to showcase the character of the terroir rather than the grape. Marcel Deiss was instrumental in convincing the INAO to make varietal labeling optional for both AOC Alsace and Alsace Grand Cru wines. Marcel Deiss makes a range of wines at various levels of quality, from the generic Alsace AOC all the way up the Grand Cru wines. There is also a small range of Vendange Tardive and Sélection de Grains Nobles wines made from Alsace's noble varieties.
