2016 | Marques De Murrieta | Capellania Reserva

Capellania is made from Viura grapes, a white variety obtained from Capellania vineyard, a 6 hectares plot located at the highest altitude of the Ygay Estate. Thanks to this altitude, the great quality of its calcareous soils and the low yields obtained from the 70 years old vines, this variety reaches its maximum potential. Every single step in the winemaking of Capellanía is aimed to reach the maximum expression of the variety: manual harvest, sorting table, low temperature fermentation… Its balanced ageing in French barrels provides the wine precision and makes Capellanía an incredible gastronomic wine.

• Wine Spectator: Elegant and expressive, this white offers lemon curd, tropical fruit, almond and white blossom notes, backed by vanilla, baking spice and fennel seed accents that just go on and on. Inviting in texture, with a long, lingering finish. Drink now through 2028.

• Vinous: Bright straw-yellow. Fresh orchard and pit fruits, buttered toast, vanilla, orange zest and a hint of jasmine on the expansive nose. Silky in texture and energetic in the mouth, offering intense white peach, pear nectar and honeysuckle flavors that pick up a suggestion of smokiness with aeration. Fleshy and well-concentrated but lively as well, finishing very long and spicy, with solid thrust and a repeating vanilla note.

Marqués de Murrieta is one of the most famous estates in the Rioja region of Spain. It is one of the more traditional houses in Rioja, and is best known for its Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, a Tempranillo-dominant wine with a small amount of Mazuelo. On top of this, Marqués de Murrieta makes a range of other wines in the region, including a varietal Mazuelo and a premium white Rioja. The company was founded in 1852 by Luciano de Murrieta, and has been owned by the Cebrián-Sagarriga family since 1983. The winery is located to the east of Logroño, which at the time of construction was within the Rioja Oriental (Rioja Baja) area. However, it was felt that Murrieta could not be allowed to belong in what was considered an inferior subregion, so the boundary was moved. Today, the estate is located in its own enclave of La Rioja Alta.
