White Wine: 2016 | Patrick Javillier | Corton Charlemagne

This is from the Pougets portion of the Grand Cru, more south-facing on marl, which is capable of lush and exotic wines. No new oak was used this year. This has an impressive level of ripeness, with sweet grapefruit and citronella, it’s lovely, long, ripe and sweet, with no Charlemagne austerity. Intense and lush on the finish.

        Reviews:

        • Vinous: Bright, light yellow. Musky peach and flowers on the ripe nose, with a hint of menthol. Fat, sweet and slightly glyceral, with plush citrus and stone fruit flavors showing more varietal than vineyard character. This fruit bomb of a Corton-Charlemagne finishes with a touch of dusty stone and decent grip.
        • Allen Meadows: Javillier indicated that this had been bottled only one week before my visit and not surprisingly there was some unabsorbed sulfur on the mildly exotic mix of white peach, lychee and white flower scents. There is exceptionally good richness to the lavishly textured and generous broad-shouldered flavors that are quite powerful while delivering fine length on the saturating if slightly warm finish.

        Producer Information

Domaine Patrick Javillier is a wine producer of the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy. It produces wine from fourteen appellations ranging between Puligny-Montrachet and Pernand-Vergelesses. Patrick Javillier took control of the family domaine in 1974 and began to expand the vineyards, acquiring sites in Meursault (Village and Premier Cru), Puligny-Montrachet, Pommard and Corton-Charlemagne in the 1980s and 1990s. At the same time, he began to manage several additional parcels owned by his wife, including Les Grands Liards, Les Montchenevoy and Premier Cru Aux Serpentières in Savigny-les-Beaune, as well as vineyard sites in Aloxe-Corton and Pernand-Vergelesses. The majority of these vineyards are planted to Chardonnay, although there are some Pinot Noir vines as well. Each parcel is vinified separately in order to retain the unique characteristics particular to each terroir. After harvest, the Chardonnay grapes are pressed and then fermented in oak barrels, with the level of new oak varying according to the parcel and vintage.
