Enveloping, warm and spicy nose with an extremely wide spectrum of aromas, ranging from dried rose to graphite via thyme and smoked bacon. Very powerful, concentrated and earthy, yet there’s brightness in there that makes it shine, Stunningly fine tannins power the super-long finish.

• Wine Advocate: The 2017 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Laurence was set to be bottled in November 2021, just after my visit. It boasts restrained aromas of leather, plum and garrigue but compensates for the slightly more sedate aromatics with a supple, complete and rounded feel on the palate. It's full-bodied, silky and long, ready to drink on release or anytime over the next decade and a half. My tastings during my evening visit to Domaine du Pegau included a number of other wines, both from Chateau Pegau and Selection Laurence Feraud. Those will be included in my follow-up coverage of other appellations of the Southern Rhône. For this report, I've focused on the current and upcoming releases from the property itself.

• Jeb Dunnuck: I loved the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Laurence. It has a more classic style in its Provençal aromas and flavors of peppery herbs, garrigue, sandalwood, and charcuterie, with medium to full-bodied richness and depth on the palate. It’s a classic, complex, gorgeous wine in the making.

Producer Information

Domaine du Pegau is a well-known and respected wine producer based in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is known for its traditional-styled wines from that appellation, based on the Grenache grape variety. The estate had its beginnings under Elvira and Leon Feraud in the mid-1900s. However, the land the estate sits on has been cultivated with vines, olives and fruits since the 1600s. The domaine in its modern form was created by Paul Feraud, the son of Elvira and Leon, in 1987. He had previously produced and sold a small amount of wine each year to negociants around France. His daughter Laurence, back from her winemaking and wine business studies, convinced him to create an independently owned family domaine. Within a few years it was regarded as one of the best in the appellation. The winery was built in 1989 and today the majority of the wines are produced there. Domaine du Pegau now owns 21 hectares (52 acres) of red Châteauneuf-du-Pape vines and two hectares of white.
