Red Wine: 2018 | Conterno Fantino | Barolo Sori Ginestra

Flavors of black cherry and raspberry show good density and concentration, enough to absorb notes of vanilla, cedar and spice gained from aging in French oak barrels. Hints of lavender and menthol brighten the wine, and a pleasant aroma bitterness balance's the rich fruit and spice notes.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: Ginestra is a large and beautiful growing site in Monforte d'Alba that gets the morning light and enjoys panoramic views facing the castle of Serralunga d'Alba. The Conterno Fantino 2018 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Sorì Ginestra is always one of my top picks from this beautiful corner of the appellation. This Barolo is ample and generous, yet it hits the palate with precision and focused sharpness. The bouquet offers wild berry, cassis, rose, menthol, earth and crushed aniseed. This is an impressive and age-worthy wine.
        • James Suckling: Super-round, rich and focused with plenty of bright berries, together with spicy and fresh, citrus-rind notes. There’s a silky underlay of loamy mineral that serves as a base for this full-bodied Barolo with fine-grained, well-poised tannins that carry the fruit and spice through the long, long finish. Creamy mineral aftertaste. Nothing overstated, just really intricate and well-defined. Great to taste now, but we will need to wait until at least 2025 for this to show its best.

        Producer Information

Conterno Fantino is an Italian wine producer based in Piedmont wine region in the northwest of the country. Located close to the village of Monforte d'AlbaIt, the estate was established in 1982 and today, produces wine from four key grape varieties: Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Chardonnay. The wine portfolio is led by a small collection of Barolo DOCG wines from the Ginestra and Mosconi cru vineyards. These wines are all fermented and macerated on their skins in stainless steel fermenters for approximately 8-15 days and spend 24 months in French oak barrels before aging in the bottle for 12 months. Conterno Fantino also produces several varietal wines under the Barbera d'Alba and Dolcetto d'Alba appellations, as well as a couple of Chardonnay wines under the wider Langhe designation. There is also a Barolo Chinato infused with more than 50 herbs, flowers and spices. In the vineyard, grapes are hand-harvest to ensure only those of premium-quality are brought into the winery. The fermentation process occurs with indigenous yeasts, with a majority of wines also going thorough malolactic fermentation. French oak is sourced for barrel-aging.
