      Reviews:

      • Vinous: Like the 1998, the 1997 is giving all it has right now, and will continue to hold based on its huge core of fruit, but I wouldn't push my luck too far.

      Producer Information

Castello dei Rampolla is a family-run wine estate in the Conca d'Oro valley in the Chianti Classico region of Tuscany. It is known for its Super Tuscan wines, Sammarco and Vigna d'Alceo. Sammarco is perhaps the best known label and was first produced in 1980, after early vintages of Sassicaia impressed Alceo di Napoli, Castello di Rampolla's owner. Sammarco is based on Cabernet Sauvignon with a small percentage of Sangiovese and Merlot, and is aged for 12-15 months in oak barrels, and then for another two years in bottle before release. Vigna d'Alceo (now simply labeled "d'Alceo") is the range-topper with regards to price and was created in 1996 by Alceo's children Luca and Maurza to honor his passing. The wine is Cabernet Suavignon-dominant, with a portion of Petit Verdot. Liù, a 100-percent Merlot (also with Tuscan IGT status), had its inaugural vintage in 2018. The portfolio also includes a Chianti Classico, which is the workhorse wine in terms of output. The final red is the Sangiovese di S. Lucia, a varietal wine made in small quantities without sulfur additions and aged for a year in terracotta amphorae. The orange wine, Trebianco, is a blend of Trebbiano, Chardonnay, Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Malvasia, fermented on skins and aged in amphorae and bottled without sulfur additions. A late-harvest Trebianco dessert wine from Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer completes the range.
