Château Clos de Sarpe is a 3.7 hectare (nine acre) Saint-Emilion estate, lying two kilometers (1.2 miles) east of St-Emilion town itself. The château, whose name dates back to the 19th Century, was granted Grand Cru Classé status in the 2012 classification of Saint-Emilion. The family estate is overseen by Jean-Guy Beyney, who took over running the château with his wife Christine in 1986. In 1998, the pair brought in renowned wine consultant Michel Rolland to advise on winemaking. Beyney's niece, Maylis Marcenat, joined the team in 2014. The vineyard, which has been certified organic since 2020, is planted to 85 percent Merlot et 15 percent Cabernet Franc. The team recently planted a small portion of Petit Verdot vines to the estate, with the aim of reviewing the variety's potential in the context of global warming. The wines are fermented in a mix concrete tanks and large format oak. They are aged in French oak barriques, of which 70 percent are new. The estate produces two wines: the grand vin, Château Clos de Sarpe (of which around 10,000 bottles are produced annually) and Charles de Sarpe, a second wine, of which only 2-3000 bottles are produced.
