      Reviews:

      • Wine Spectator: Racy and bright, with kirsch, floral and chalk notes. The finish has good nervosite and tension. Tightly wound now, but the length is there. Equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
      • James Suckling: Lots of currants and sweet tobacco in this wine on the nose. Full body, with firm tannins and a fresh finish. Tight and silky.

                                                Producer Information

Château Bernadotte is a Cru Bourgeois wine estate located in the Haut-Médoc region of northern Bordeaux and located only a few hundred meters due west of the Pauillac appellation. The estate was known as Château Fournas until 1997 when it was purchased by May Eliane de Lencquesaing, then-owner of the esteemed Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Pauillac. Part of the Fournas estate's original holdings included a small, ten-hectare (25-acre) vineyard plot in Pauillac. This was transferred to Pichon-Lalande with its purchase although de Lencquesaing oversaw extensive renovations of the new château Bernadotte in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In 2007, Bernadotte came under the direction of major Champagne player Roederer when the latter took a majority stake in Pichon-Lalande. Roederer then sold Bernadotte to the Thai-based travel retail giant King Power in 2012. The 35-hectare (86-acre) estate is made up of soils with gravel, sand, and some clay. The vineyards are planted to around 50 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 44 percent Merlot, four percent Cabernet Franc and two percent Petit Verdot. The vines are around 30 years old on average. Château Bernadotte produces a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant Bordeaux blend and a second wine under the label Fournas Bernadotte. Château Bernadotte's Bordeaux blend goes through primary and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel vats before barrel maturing in French oak (30 percent new) for 12 to 18 months. Production averages around 10,000 cases annually. Bernadotte was named after Jean Bernadotte, a former Napoleonic Marshal and subsequent (elected) King of Sweden, where he adopted the title of Charles XIV John of Sweden. Reportedly an erstwhile land owner in Le Fournas, Bernadotte's actual relation to the château, built nearly 20 years after his death, is hard to ascertain.
