      Detailed Description

      Reviews:

      • Falstaff: Dark ruby garnet, violet reflections, subtle ocher edge brightening. Delicately spicy, black wild berries, nuances of heart cherries, tobacco, blueberry nuances with a hint of precious wood. Fine sweetness on the palate, firm tannins, delicate nougat, acid structure rich in finesse, red berries on the finish, fine currant touch on the finish, salty-lemony, fine minerality, reliable aging potential.
      • VertdeVin: The nose is fruity, fresh, elegant, full and offers complexity as well as a nice touch of fresh flowers. The wine wins if it is decanted. It reveals notes of pulpy / fresh cassis and redcurrants associated with strawberry, bright raspberry, fresh flowers with hints of fresh blond tobacco, racy minerality, with very discreet hints of pink pepper as well as a subtle hint of bergamot, well presence of iodine and vanilla (in the background). The palate is fruity, elegant, racy, all in delicacy and offers a nice juiciness / tangy fruit, a nice freshness, salinity / sapidity, precision, a certain purity, a nice tangy frame, harmony, a good guideline as well as a nice finesse of the grain. On the palate this wine expresses notes of pulpy / juicy raspberry, redcurrants and blackberry associated with violet, fresh / juicy cassis, hints of juicy purple plum as well as hints of caramelization, blond tobacco with fine toasted hazelnut, crushed almond and a hint of pepper. Tannins are elegant and smooth. Good length. A nice chew on the finish / persistence. A more classic and “straight” wine than the 2019 vintage tasted at the same time.

      Producer Information

Château Haut-Brion is the oldest of Bordeaux's five first growths, and one of the most famous wines in the world. Located in Pessac-Léognan, south of the city of Bordeaux, the château is rather far removed from its counterparts, all of which are found in the Médoc. Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild and Latour are all in Pauillac, while Château Margaux is – unsurprisingly – in Margaux. The property is in the northern Graves on the outskirts of Bordeaux, and is now surrounded by encroaching buildings and roads. It is also flanked by La Mission Haut-Brion, which was bought by Haut-Brion's owners in the early 1980s. The majority of the estate's 51 hectares (126 acres) of vineyard is planted to red varieties with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot covering 48 hectares (118 acres) while three hectares (7.5 acres) are given over to Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. The Haut-Brion cuvée tends to have more Merlot than the wines from the Medoc, with Cabernet Sauvignon in more of a supporting role (this is reflected in the vineyard). As such, Haut-Brion is more rounded and softer than other Left Bank wines. The château describes the wine as having an empyreumatic (charred organic matter) bouquet.
