Color Pale straw with light green hue. Initially, complex aromas of pronounced gun-smoke flintiness amid lightly roasted cashew nut and nougat. Ensuing white stone fruits – peach and nectarine, archetypal of Adelaide Hills, with a faint suggestion of lemon zest. Fresh and vibrant bursts of citrus and white stone fruit precede a beguiling palate that boasts persistence and power whilst retaining a certain elegance. Wonderful length of flavor: biscuit, lemon cheesecake, rich and textural with subtle creaminess harmonising amid wet slate-like acidity.

• James Halliday: A pristine and characterful vintage in the grand lineage of this much-celebrated label, juxtaposing compelling struck flint complexity of wild, high solids fermentation with impeccable fruit of fine-tuned, high-strung focus. A chardonnay of effortless energy, faultless line and crystalline finesse.

• Huon Hooke: Light straw-yellow hue. The nose is very flinty with stony minerality, struck-flint aromas, also chalky, especially in the mouth. Intense and fine, a fairly pared-back style, with quite high acidity and a driving, linear palate that is quite tight and nervy and has an early-picked tension.

Penfolds has extensive vineyard holdings located across the various winegrowing regions of South Australia. Some of these are among the most iconic properties in the country, including Magill Estate, and the Kalimna and Koonunga Hill vineyards in the northern Barossa.The Woodbury estate in the Eden Valley is planted entirely to Riesling where a cooler climate is well-suited to the variety. In comparison, the Coonawarra estate is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz on the terra rossa soil type that the region is famous for. This clay-based soil type has remarkably good drainage characteristics and is found in numerous other wine regions throughout the world, most notably La Mancha in Spain. In addition, a wide range of grape growers are also used, both in the core South Australian regions and further afield, particularly for Chardonnay. In total, around 220 different sources contribute to production.
