This has the dark fruit and loam edges of a mountain fruit–based wine, with waves of warm cassis and ganache that are expressive and velvety in feel, while menthol, sage and bay leaf notes fill in the background. Grippy yet inviting, with the flavors melding wonderfully through the long finish, where a sense of freshness pervades.

• Wine Advocate: Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate has a wonderfully earthy nose of truffles, tilled soil and mossy bark over a core of fresh blackcurrants, black plums and blueberry pie with a waft of bay leaves. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant and refreshing with a beautiful quiet intensity and great freshness, finishing long and earthy.

Graphite, smoke, savory herbs, mint, leather and a core of inky dark red and purplish fruit infuse this deep, beautifully layered Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2014 is a wine built on energy and aromatics that won't hit its stride until at least age ten … I tasted a large number of wines during my most recent visit to this benchmark estate on Spring Mountain. Philip Togni boasts one of the longest track records of excellence in Napa Valley. Today, Togni's daughter, Lisa, runs the show. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon has turned out beautifully, while the three library releases I tasted were a poignant reminder of just how regal these wines become with age.

Philip Togni Vineyard is a small, family-owned Napa Valley wine producer, focused on producing high-quality wine from Cabernet Sauvignon. It is one of the oldest producers of the Spring Mountain District AVA (American Viticultural Area).The wine collection is simple, featuring varietal Cabernet Sauvignon sourced directly from the estate. This wine has strong characteristics of Spring Mountain, quite tannic in its youth but shows its elegance with age. For the impatient, the second label Tanbark Hill is a Cabernet Sauvignon produced from younger vines on the property, and is more approachable in its youth. Additionally, there is a sweet wine in the style of Constantia called Ca' Togni.The Philip Togni Vineyard was planted in 1981 by Philip Togni with his wife Birgitta, on an ideal ten acre (4 hectare) plot, 2000 feet (600 meters) above sea level. Today, Philip Togni is remarkably a self-contained producer, meaning that everything from vineyard management to winemaking, bottling and shipping is completed on site.
