      Producer Information

Vergelegen Estate is a historic wine producer of Somerset West in the Western Cape of South Africa. The estate has cultivated vines for over 320 years. Vergelegen (meaning "situated far away") was named in the 1700s by Willem Adriaan who claimed the land upon suceeding his father as the governor of the Cape. The 30,000 hectare estate in the foothills of the Hottentots Holland mountain range took three days to reach by ox-wagon. Adriaan planted vines as well as fruit orchards to accompany the numerous cattle stations throughout the estate. After six years, he was found guilty of corrupt practices and sent back to the Netherlands and the estate was split into four seperate farms, one of which today is known as Vergelegen. The estate went through numerous ownerships throughout the 1700s, 1800s and 1900s. Numerous famous and influential guests have enjoyed the hospitality at Vergelegen over the years, the most notable include the first meeting of the caucus of the ANC with Nelson Mandela and Thabo M'Beki. Estate vineyards total 117 hectares (289 acres) of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Shiraz as well as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Here, the Atlantic ocean helps to moderate the temperatures with False Bay a mere six kilometers to the southwest. The farm is rich is soil diversity with 21 different types documented, some of which are among the most ancient viticultural soils in the world. Vines are found planted on pockets of soil with a high clay content to ensure water retention throughout the hot and dry summer period. The flagship wine range from Vergelegen is composed of three wines led by the Vergelegen wine, a Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend with Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It spends 18 months barrel-aging in 100% new French oak prior to 48 months in bottle before it is released. The G.V.B red and white blends complete the range. The remaining portfolio is composed of single-vineyard, brut, reserve and straw wine collections.
