      Reviews:

      • Wine Enthusiast: This juicy wine is full of red fruits with a core of firm tannins. It has the acidity that is such a mark of the vintage, giving freshness and crisp fruitiness. The underlying tannins will allow it to age, so wait until 2023.

      Producer Information

Château Tronquoy-Lalande is a wine estate in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of northern Bordeaux's Médoc region, on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, roughly 60km (37 miles) north of Bordeaux city center. Its grand vin is made chiefly from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is not a cru classé, but its quality and acclaim have risen steadily in the last decade or so. The château building, with its distinctive square towers, dates back to the 18th Century, although by the 1960s, the property was virtually derelict. It was saved by former owner Arlette Castéja-Texier (who bought the property in 1968), with help from the négociant Dourthe, who at that time had exclusive rights to sell the wine. Castéja-Texier ran the estate until 2006, when it was acquired by French construction moghuls Martin and Olivier Bouygues. Tronquoy-Lalande's 30-hectare (74-acre) vineyard is planted with just over 50 percent Merlot and just under 40 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, with six percent Petit Verdot and three percent Cabernet Franc. A small parcel of the vineyard is planted to Semillon and Sauvignon Gris, which produces around 250 cases of the Tronquoy-Lanlande Bordeaux Blanc annually. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks, whose complex temperature control systems are powered by geothermal energy. Solar and wind power are also utilised in the winery. The grand vin is typically aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, of which around a quarter are new. Tronquoy-Lalande also produce a second wine, Tronquoy de Sainte Anne which, depending on the vintage, may represent anywhere between 10 and 50 percent of the estate's total red wine output.
