2018 | Domaine des Lambrays | Clos des Lambrays (Half Bottle)

This half bottle of the 2018 Clos des Lambrays opens up to a floral bouquet of wilted rose petals and incense, plus hints of cedar filtering through the red berry fruit. The elegant palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, peppery but harmonious. Plenty of energy toward the finish. This is a deep and complete Clos des Lambrays that was vinified with 80% whole cluster and matured in 50% new oak.

• Decanter: Clos des Lambrays is in something of a transitional phase right now, with the departure of one winemaker and the arrival of another, so it will be interesting to see how the style evolves. This is a classically firm, ageworthy expression of the terroir, marked by its 80% whole bunches, which give it a stemmy, peaty, almost Islay malt whisky-like note, a tannic backbone and layers of dark black cherry and damson fruit.

• Vinous: The 2017 Clos des Lambrays: vinified and blended by Thierry Brouin, raised and racked by Boris Champy and bottled by current winemaker Jacques Desvauges. Got it? Good. There is just a touch of reduction on the nose, which is perhaps a little smudged and a bit static compared to the nascent 2018. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and dark berry fruit laced with clove, bay leaf and sage. The linear finish lacks some depth and grip. Not bad, though not the best in recent years.

Domaine des Lambrays is a producer located in Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy. The domaine is best known for its Pinot Noir wines from the Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru vineyard, over which it has a near monopole. The wines are highly acclaimed by critics, regularly scoring highly in several publications.In addition to the flagship Grand Cru wine, Lambray also produces Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Les Loups. This is made from the younger vines on the Clos des Lambrays vineyard, combined with fruit from the Clos Sorbet vineyard located at by the domaine house and cellar. The wolf (loup in French) is the emblematic animal of Morey-Saint-Denis, appearing on the village crest as well as the domaine's.
