This superb Malbec is deep purple, with powerful aromas of red berries and floral notes. Flavors of plum and sweet blackberry. Finishes with ripe, balanced tannins.

• Patricio Tapia: Block 1 has a little more than two hectares, and the grapes from stonier soils go into this selection, while the rest goes into the Single Vineyard, the line just below this one. This is a faithful expression of malbec in Altamira, although it's a modern malbec, very much identified with the idea of showing the calcareous soils and the mountainous climate. There are notes of herbs, fruits, and flowers here, plus very firm tannins that are very much in sync with the textures you usually find in Altamira's most ambitious wines—those that show the tension and roughness of the calcium carbonate. A wine that needs at least five years in the cellar to begin to gain depth in those flavors and move beyond the fruit.
