2019 | Orin Swift | Palermo Cabernet Sauvignon

A brooding red core with a rich cardinal hued rim, the wine opens with classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon aromatics — ripe cassis, sunburst raspberry, graphite and chapparal surrounded by a balanced frame of new oak. The bold aromatics translate onto the palate seamlessly with more cassis, red licorice, fresh fennel and mixed berry compote. Integrated yet prominent puckering tannins finish off the wine with a touch of lingering black tea.

• James Suckling: A nicely focused version, with cassis and bitter plum puree supported by a graphite spine, which is well-buried in the fruit. A judicious apple wood frame lets the fruit play out, with a late hint of chaparral.

• Wine Advocate: The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Palermo is assembled from vineyards in Pope Valley and Coombsville, among others, supplemented by bits of Merlot, Petite Sirah and Syrah. Subtle cedar notes accent cassis and cherries on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is supple and softly dusty in feel, then turns a bit tart and thins out on the finish, adding hints of bitter cocoa.
