Producer Information
Pierre Amadieu is a sizeable wine producer and nĂŠgociant based in the town and appellation of Gigondas in the southern RhĂ´ne region of southeastern Franceo. The estate makes a range of wines from Gigondas, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the CĂ´tes du RhĂ´ne and other appellations in the wider area. The estate was established in 1929 by the eponymous Pierre Amadieu who began making wine under his label with fruit from his family vineyard in Gigondas. This is expanded in the late 1940s with the acquisition of the Romane and La Machotte estates, also in the commune. In the 1960s and 1970s the running of the estate is progressively taken over by Pierre's two sons: Jean-Pierre and Claude. In 1989, Pierre Amadieu Jr. (the son of Jean-Pierre) in turn takes over the domaine. The winery and facilities have grown over the decades with a cavernous former railway tunnel in Pierrelongue, over 20km (12 miles) to the northeast of Gigondas, used as an aging cellar for most of the 20th Centruy. More recently, the domaine has seen a winery expansion in 2014 and the completion of a new aging cellar in 2019. The domaine now boasts 137 hectares (338 acres) of vineyard in Gigondas alone â the largest single vineyard holding in the appellation. The domaine also operates as a nĂŠgoce, buying in a wide range of fruit and wine from appellations across the southern RhĂ´ne. As a consequence, a wide number of labels are produced under the Pierre Amadieu label, from Châteauneuf-du-Pape to Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise. In 2019, the estate also took over Domaine les Hautes Cances in Cairanne. This covers 18.6 hectares with just over 12 hectares (31 acres) in Cairanne, 4.9 hectares in the CĂ´tes du RhĂ´ne Villages and 1.2 hectares of IGP.
