      Detailed Description

Deep ruby red with aromas of forest fruits such as blackberry, raspberry and cranberry that dominate delicate cocoa and cedar. On the palate, bright red fruits like raspberry and cranberry give length and structure to help elevate layers of cedar, clover and cocoa that are so gracefully interwoven throughout.

      Reviews:

      • Decanter: The 2020 vintage is a masterpiece of complexity, displaying cinnamon spice, mace, black olives, cassis and blood orange which flow through the palate with balance, grace and without any roughness. It is fresh, savoury and long, easily able to compete with the best Northern Rhone examples.
      • James Suckling: This springs from the glass with a crescendo of violet, clove and summer red fruits, with pithy dark cherries and plums. Anise, black olive and charcuterie, too. This is a doppelganger for a modernist Cote-Rotie, such is the flare and polish. So bright, yet densely packed and forceful of extract, tannic exactitude and prodigious length. Wow! This is a wonderful wine from the semi-arid heat of Cortona, a place whence I never expected quality such as this based on uninteresting wines from there in the past. A dichotomous meld of power with a balletic friskiness.

            Producer Information

Stefano Amerighi is a small producer of Syrah wines in the Cortona region of Tuscany. The estate vineyard, Poggiobello di Farneta, was planted in 2002 on sheltered south and south-facing hillsides. Rootstocks were sourced from the Rhône Valley and clones were carefully matched to his property. In the winery, interventions are kept to a minimum. After de-stemming, some grapes are left in whole bunches while the rest is gently pressed by foot. Ferments take place in small concrete vats using wild yeasts and foregoing temperature control and sulfur additions. The wine is aged in a mix of French oak, cement tanks and ceramic casks for around 14 months (some vintages have seen no oak) and bottled unfiltered to maintain the complexity of the wine. In exceptional years Stefano ages some Syrah for an additional 30 months in bottle before releasing it as the Apice cuvée. He has also recently introduced a rosé Toscana IGT called Syrosà.
