The nose opens with tempting aromas of currant, black licorice and hints of coffee. On the palette, the opulent, sweet-fruit flavors are balanced with subtle notes of anise, peppercorns and a touch of tobacco to add warmth and dimension.

• Wine Enthusiast: Earthy aromas of dried fennel and wood lacquer meet with dark plum on the nose of this bottling. There is a viscous texture to the palate, where firm tannins uphold flavors of dark berry and light oak.

• James Suckling: This is aromatic with notes of cassis, dried spicy herbs, walnuts and spice box. Medium-bodied with juicy, fruit forward character and polished tannins. Sleek and round-textured. Hints of citrus peel and spices at the end.

Producer Information

Provenance Vineyards is a wine producer based in the Napa Valley. It released its first vintage in 1999, and today its main focus is producing Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon and Napa Valley Merlot, as well as a Rutherford Sauvignon Blanc. The estate's vineyards span the many viticultural areas of Napa Valley and it has a sister winery, Hewitt Vineyard, in Rutherford. The Vineyard George III in Rutherford dates back to the 1800s when George Yount is thought to have planted the first grapevines in this region at Caymus Ranch. By the 1900s the estate had been acquired by George de Latour (renowned for establishing Beaulieu Vineyard), who planted it to Cabernet Sauvignon. The name of the vineyard eventually changed to Vineyard George III in 1988 after it was acquired by Andy Beckstoffer. The Estate Vineyard covers 12 hectares (29.7 acres) of land around the Provenance winery. The vineyard was first planted to Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon in 2003 and is divided into eight blocks, which are individually picked and fermented for increased complexity. Further north in the Napa Valley lies the Three Palms Vineyard in Calistoga. South of Rutherford in the Oakville region is the historic Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard. This vineyard has been producing award-winning wines since the 1889 Paris World Fair and was replanted in the 1990s. The topography of this vineyard is ideal for the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon due to its alluvial soils.
