Mezcal: Del Maguey Wild Papalome

Another fantastic single estate Mezcal by Del Maguey, this one coming from San Pedro Teozacoalco and made with 100% Wild Maguey Papalome agave. The distillation takes place in a stainless steel pot with a clay condenser and bamboo tube.

Size: 750mL

Proof: 96 (48% ABV)

Origin: Mexico

Distillery: Del Maguey Distillery

Detailed Description

Papalome or Papalometl, meaning "butterfly" in the Nahuatl language, is a wild-harvested agave fairly similar in appearance to agave Tobalá. This offering from Del Maguey is made by Maestro Mezcalero Fernando Caballero Cruz in San Pedro Teozacoalco, Oaxaca. Maestro Fernando’s method of distillation is a bit unusual as he employs stainless steel pot-stills with a clay and bamboo condenser offering what some might say is the best of both worlds.

Del Maguey Wild Papalome Mezcal Tasting Notes

Nose: It is dirty and gamey on the nose with notes of hot clay, charred pineapple and burning mesquite (no doubt enhanced by the clay in the condenser).

Palate: The palate is strong with leather, slate, a hint of black olive, and meatiness.

Finish: It has a medium long finish with slightly sweet notes of dark dried black cherries.

Distillery Information

Del Maguey (pronounced ma–gay) Single Village Mezcal was founded in 1995, and they’ve been one of the most innovative and trail-blazing international spirits brands since. Their founder, Ron Cooper, is largely credited for the current growing popularity of Mezcal on the international market. His dedication to Mezcal and the country of Mexico, where Del Maguey is produced, has helped to dispel many of the worm-in-bottle and other negative stereotypes that surrounded Mezcal for years.
