Port Charlotte OLC:01 2010 | 750ML Tasting Notes

Nose: Initially lovely earthy peat smoke and dark fruit, fig predominantly and toffee. As the aromas start to open soft peach and honey appear and a nutty nougat note sets the tone. Baked orange and a hint of mulled wine spice. The peat smoke notes are constant and start to bring out some resinous woody aromas, the longer you allow it to open the more depth you discover, more roasted coffee, syrup and citrus, more chocolate and crushed sea shells.

Palate: As soon as this dram touches your lips you feel the soft oily texture and then, as it coats the palate a subtle dryness changes the tone. The leading notes from the Oloroso cask and the peat smoke define the identity of the whisky but underneath there is a fruity sweetness – figs, orange and peach with a nutty nougat note. With another sip the darker notes of tobacco, boot polish and more earthy smoke give a pepperiness that really draws you into this magnificent whisky.

Finish: The finish is a dry earthy peat smoke with lime and figs. A chocolate and vanilla note comes through and some salty, sandy character. Peat embers give a last hint of smoke.

Distillery Information

Bruichladdich is one of the nine distilleries on the Scottish island of Islay. It is internationally renowned for the production of single malt whisky distilled under the Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte and Octomore labels. The distillery was built in 1881 by the Harvey brothers on the westernmost part of the island. After family arguments, William Harvey ran the business until a fire in 1934 and his death in 1936. Over following decades it changed hands several times and was eventually closed in 1994. In 2000, Bruichladdich was bought by a group of investors led by Mark Reynier of Murray McDavid. The whole distillery was dismantled and reassembled, though it retains its Victorian equipment, is gravity-fed and has no computer controlled processes. In 2012 the business was bought by Rémy Cointreau. While Islay whisky is generally known for its peaty quality, the Bruichladdich-labelled production is actually unpeated. Writings from the 1880s describe the distillery as being the only one on the island not drying its malt using peat. Its uniquely tall and narrow-necked stills were originally selected on the construction of the distillery in to produce a pure elegant spirit unlike those from other distilleries on Islay. Bruichladdich place great emphasis on the provenance of barley in their production and marketing. The unpeated range uncludes the Bere Barley expression from ancient strains grown on Orkney, the Islay Barley release with the cereal sourced from three farms on the island, the Organic Scottish Barley, and the Classic Laddie from 100-percent Scottish farms. Heavily peated expressions are released under the banner of Port Charlotte, a village two miles along the shore where lie the ruins of the Lochindaal distillery, known historically for its peaty malts. The modern whiskies are distilled at Bruichladdich and aged in the old stone warehouses at Port Charlotte. The Octomore series are a collection batch releases, which marketed as having the highest peat levels of any single malt. Octomore Farm is a hillside property on peat soil above Port Charlotte which grew barley and produced whisky in the 1800s. Bruichladdich is particularly innovative which has resulted a wide array of limited edition bottlings including production of The Botanist gin.
