Distillery Information

George Remus is a an American brand of bourbon whiskies distilled in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. The brand is named in commemoration of the legendary bootlegger George Remus who has been credited as the inspiration of Jay Gatsby in F. Scott Fitzgerald's book The Great Gatsby. Since the inception of Prohibiton, Remus utilized his background as a pharmacist and a criminal defence lawyer to exploit holes in the 18th Amendment and Volstead Act. He purchased pharmacies and distilleries to produce and sell bonded liquor for medicinal purposes. This included warehousing grounds on the Rossville Distillery, which today is home of George Remus whisky. He quickly became a very wealthy man, known for exuberant gifts and parties at his numerous mansions. In 1925, Remus was sentenced to two years in prison for bootlegging. He confided in a fellow inmate that he had left his estate to his wife. The inmate was an undercover prohibition agent who proceeded to pursuit Remus's wife and convinced her to liquidate his multimillion dollar empire and hire a hitman to kill Remus. In a dramatic pursuit, Remus fatally shot his wife and proceeded to spend 7 months in an insane asylum as punishment. Upon release from the institution, Remus went on to live a modest life for the next 20 years. He died in 1952 at the age of 73. The George Remus Straight Bourbon Whisky is non-chill filtered and bottled at 94 proof. It is a blend of two different high-rye mash bills for complexity, the first being 60 percent corn, 47 percent rye and 4 percent malted barley and the second 75 percent corn, 21 percent rye and 4 percent malted barley The brand was established by two entrepreneurs Chad Brizendine and Jake Warm. It was sold to the distilling griant MGP Ingedients Inc. in 2016.
