Teaninich was founded by Captain Hugh Munro, who lost his sight after surviving a gunshot to the head during a battle. He was due to marry a woman after returning from the skirmish, but her father would not let it happen. However, many years later, her dying wish was to see Captain Munro one last time at the local church, which is the scene unfolding on the label. Told you it was a saga. Batch 1 is a release of 862 bottles. ‘That Boutique-y Whisky Company’ bottles single malts, single grains and bourbons from a variety of renowned distilleries as well as producing award-winning blended malts and blends. These whiskies are adorned with cultish graphic novel-style labels.

Nose: Hazelnut spread on rye bread, buttery croissants and fizzy oak spices.

Palate: Floral at first - almost vegetal at points. Soon enough, the sweet baking notes from the nose return in full force.

Finish: Honey, pear and hints of fresh barley.

Distillery Information

The Teaninich Distillery is one shrouded in mystery. Founded in 1817, the Highland single malt whisky producer today has an annual capacity of 10.2 million litres and distills for brands including Haig Dimple, VAT 69 and Johnnie Walker. Despite its size and stature (it’s Diageo’s third-largest whisky distillery, covering more than 20 acres), there’s not much out there about Teaninich as a whisky in its own right – which is rather a shame as the liquid exudes as much character and body as its two illustrious near-neighbours: Dalmore and Glenmorangie.
