In 1977, Bob and Zelma Long established Long Vineyards on a 120 acre piece of property. The first vines were planted by Italian immigrants during the 1880s. The Estate Chardonnay vineyard was originally planted in 1967. Long Vineyards is a small family winery located on Pritchard Hill just east of the Oakville AVA. Lake Hennessy is just to the north, and Stags Leap borders the region on the south. The vines are planted at elevations ranging from 700 to 1,200 feet above sea level. The Longs were among the first Napa Valley vintners to ferment their Chardonnay in oak barrels. They 4,000 total cases a year of estate and single vineyard wines. The estate production includes 1,200 cases of Chardonnay and 130 cases of Old Vine Chardonnay. Bob and Zelma also make 400-500 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, 60-80 cases of Sangiovese from Seghesio Vineyards in Sonoma County, and a Pinot Grigio with grapes from the Laird Family’s Carneros vineyard.
