2007 | Gianni Brunelli | Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

This 2007 Riserva is ripe, opulent and supremely exotic. It displays incredible notes of wild spice, dried fruit and tea leaves. There is plenty of tannin here, but the freshness is so beguiling, with an almost salty, rocky minerality running through. The finish is dense, complex and serious, leading to a marked and lingering balsam note. All in all, this is a hedonistic, ample wine with a promising future ahead.

• Wine Advocate: For sheer drinking pleasure, it’s hard to match the wines from this estate. They also deliver in terms of value for money. This is a delightful Riserva, which expresses the heat of the vintage, but somehow tames it: sweet, plush and concentrated with flavours of sweet red fruits, succulent tannins, haunting perfume and a backbone of acidity for balance and poise. Modernised tradition at its best.

• Vinous: Bright red with a pale rim. Bright red cherry, raspberry jam, minerals and sweet spices on the captivating nose. Juicy and fresh in the mouth, with citrus and spice notes complementing sour red cherry and sweet redcurrant flavors. Sweet tannins and harmonious bright acidity lift and support this wine's red fruits on the back end.

Producer Information

Gianni Brunelli is a small wine producer in the Tuscan hillside region of Montalcino, producing the eponymous Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino wines from the ubiquitous Sangiovese grape. The Gianni Brunelli estate was was founded in 1987 when Brunelli himself purchased Le Chiuse di Sotto, a small estate in the northeast of the DOCG zone that had once belonged to his father. Today, the estate makes two Brunello di Montalcino wines, a Rosso di Montalcino, and a Toscana IGT wine called Amor Constante. Farming has been organic since the beginning, and all work throughout the growing season is carried out by hand. A green harvest is performed in July to leave seven or eight bunches on each vine, lowering the yield and ultimately giving a more intese, concentrated wine.
