Producer Information
The nobleman Rudolf Wittenswald bequeathed the Jahringhof estate to the church between 1130 and 1135 - out of gratitude. The Salzburg Bishop Konrad I awarded the entire estate to the Styrian Benedictine monastery Admont. The estate grew over the centuries through purchases and donations. The order also ordered vineyards in the region around Železne dveri (Eisenthür) and Kapela. As early as 1300, Abbot Engelbert bought a vineyard in the Železne dveri (Eisenthür) region from a villager named Lubet Valba from Radgona. The Benedictines cultivated wine on all their estates, which the subordinate farmers from Admont brought to Austria in carts. Written sources show that the monastic vineyards were cultivated in an exemplary manner and the wine was expertly pressed. The monks gave the administrators written instructions on how the subordinate farmers or tenants should cultivate the vineyard. In 1712, Abbot Anselm Lierzer gave the administrator of Jahringhof these instructions (“Instructiones”), which comprised 43 points: Since the vineyards are of particular importance to us, we instruct the workers to show the greatest enthusiasm, loyalty and To show diligence so that every job is done in a timely and appropriate manner. The first cut and the chopping are to be carried out in his presence, with particular care and patience. These two things should not be done too late, otherwise it could cause serious damage to the crops. Nor should the vines be tied too early or in wet weather.
