Jet-plum-ruby, bright and intense to a tight, bright rim, this offers black and red fruit on the nose, complemented by grilled fennel. Earthy and mineral, with citrus notes - bitter orange - and opulent cherry liqueur, this has a multi-layered complexity and sensuality. The palate echoes the aromatics presented on the nose, set within a luxuriant texture. Opulent yet fresh, focused and spiced this has a poised, protracted, elegant finish.

• Adam Lechmere: Lush liquorice and exotic spice on the nose. Jewel-bright. A lovely clean scent of washed linen, and hints of damp earth. Palate is luscious, delicate, smoky, exotic. There’s a perfect balance of acidity and tannin, the latter fresh, soft, clean and with fine length filling the mouth and nose with aromas of blueberry and dark briar fruit. There’s so much understated character to this wine, it has tension and energy, it’s lean, precise and above all delicious.

• Wine Advocate: The nose of ebullient red cherry, wild strawberry, minerals and crushed rose petals. Good structure with a pinch of white pepper and sea salt on the finish.

Château Rocheyron is situated in Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, just 3.6km from the centre of Saint-Émilion, on the edge of the celebrated limestone plateau. Peter is set on creating (or re-creating) a new norm - a return, in a sense, to the past but with all of the advantages of contemporary winemaking knowledge. He wants the wine to be as natural as possible and relishes in the advanced age of the vines, despite their limited yields. Farmed organically, Peter intends to move towards biodynamic disciplines, which is how he works in Spain. A firm believer that wine is made in the vineyard, this property is being run, in Peter’s own words, “like a First Growth” with meticulous attention to detail, rigorous vineyard management and ruthless selection.
