2020 | Domaine Romy | Imperial Rose

Here's something you don't see that often, rosé from Beaujolais, a region that is famous for its light red wines. This is made from the classic grape of the region, gamay noir, to produce a pink that tastes decidedly different from the Provence norm. It's the perfect picnic wine.

Producer Information

Nicolas Romy and his father Dominique represent the tenth generation of a tradition of winemaking in their family that stretches back to the 1700's. They are located in Morancé, in the heart of the area known as “Les Pierres Dorées”, to the south of Beaujolais, north of Lyon. This is a premium wine-growing region, so named for the golden limestone the houses there are built from, and the stones found in the vineyards which are stained with iron oxides and take on a golden hue. Romy take an organic approach in the vineyards which are Terra Vitis certified. 25 hectares are under vine planted with Gamay, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the unique chalky-clayey yellow ochre coloured soils of the region. Some of the vines are over 50 years old. Nicolas had some geological investigations completed which concluded that certain plots of land possessed the same characteristic as Volnay. He therefore made the decision to plant Pinot Noir, which was first harvested in 2015. Romy's wines are a steal price-wise. Wonderful examples of thirst-quenching, fragrant, fresh and vibrant fruit, which reflect the true expressions of their unique terroir.
