Capezzana wines were produced under the Chianti designation until Carmignano was awarded its own DOC status in 1975 and DOCG status in 1990. The classification came about following a campaign of local producers, of which Capezzana was one of the most significant. The estate now accounts for more than half of all the DOCG Carmignano wine produced each year. Sangiovese is the most significant red variety of the portfolio, often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The most important white varieties are Trebbiano and Malvasia. The estate has been planted with vines for centuries, and the region itself is known for its wine production during Roman rule.
