Wilderness Trail 10 Year Old Single Barrel Wheated Bourbon Whiskey Tasting Notes

Nose: Tart cherry preserves lead, along with dark molasses and brown sugar. Orange marmalade is up next, once again pairing a touch of fruit with sour elements. It’s a syrupy, sweet, and fruity start, along with tart elements that keep those very rich aromas bright enough to captivate.

Palate: The first sip is mostly stone fruit, lemon peel, and fresh cherry. The midpalate leans into citrus, with both candied lemon peel and a fascinating (and not too potent) grapefruit element. Those are paired with classic bourbon notes one might expect after a decade in the barrel: leather, dried tobacco, white pepper, and a light caramel all slide from front to back over the tongue.

Finish: Oak comes rip roaring back on the finish, along with dark cherry and both white and black pepper. It’s certainly a welcome end and nice step up from a somewhat muffled experience on the tongue.

Distillery Information

Wilderness Trail Distillery is definitely one of my favorite Kentucky “craft” distillers, so I am a little biased writing this review. However, Wilderness Trail earned that bias, because of the enjoyment I have had visiting the distillery and drinking their products. There are many things unique about this distillery, not the least being that the owners first started their business cultivating yeast strains, problem solving and consulting for other distilleries, rather than distilling their own product. Their company, Ferm Solutions, provides yeast and consulting services to many companies in the fuel and beverage alcohol businesses. It was the profits and expertise from this business that allowed them to start Wilderness Trail Distillery, and rapidly expand it into the facility that it is today. Wilderness Trail Distillery is located on the outskirts of Danville, Kentucky, on a scenic property where the distillery, a new visitor center, and rickhouses have been sprouting for the last few years. The grounds are also used for many events, such as A Taste in Danville, cruise-ins, a chili cook-off, and the Kentucky State BBQ Festival. There are also monthly “First Fridays” at the distillery, where people can come enjoy music, local food truck(s) and of course, bourbon. Wilderness Trail Distillery is easy to find. There are signs along the way, and Google maps knows where it is. There is plenty of parking, with some spaces in a paved area, and many more spaces in gravel and grass parking areas. The visitor center also houses the gift and bottle shop, and that is where tour tickets are purchased.
