      Producer Information

Rocca di Montegrossi is an estate located in the commune of Gaiole, Tuscany. It is best known for its Chianti Classico wines based on the Sangiovese grape variety. The property covers 100 hectares (247 acres) of which 20ha are planted with grapes (Sangiovese accounts for 13). Another 20 hectares contain olive groves, while the remainder is woodland. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2010. They lie on gentle south- and southeast-facing slopes between 340 and 510 meters (1,017 to 1,772ft). Soils are chalky loam. The “normale” Chianti Classico bottling is the core release. It features around 90 percent Sangiovese with small amounts of Canaiolo and Colorino. It is aged for 12-14 months, mainly in casks and large barrels made with French oak from Alliers. In the best vintages, a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione wine is made from the San Marcellino vineyard. This 7-hectare (17 acre) property includes 0.9ha of Pugnitello, a rare indigenous variety which since 2006 has accounted for about 5 percent of the blend with Sangiovese. The wine is aged in medium toast Alliers oak barriques for 24 months. It spends another two years in bottle before release. The lineup also includes an IGT Toscana rosso (Geremia) which is a 70:30 combination of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. This spends 24 months in barrique and around 18 months in bottle. An IGT Toscana Sangiovese rosato is also produced from the San Marcellino vineyard. The wine portfolio is completed by a Vin Santo del Chianti Classico made from Malvasia Bianca. The grapes for this are dried in a specifically-designed space up in the winery rafters. It is aged in small barrels made from oak, cherry and mulberry wood. The style is a particular love of owner Marco Ricasoli-Firadolfi. The castle (Rocca) was originally established in the 7th and 8th centuries by Geremia, the founder of the Ricasoli dynasty. One branch, the Ricasoli-Firidolfis, own the estate today. It is strategically located, overlooking much of Chianti and the upper Valdarno. Accordingly, the location has had a rich history and has been the site of many battles. It was destroyed by the Florentines in 1172, and then again by the troops of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in 1530.
