The domaine focuses predominantly on white wines made from Chardonnay, producing three grand crus and eight premier crus largely from Chassagne-Montrachet, as well as Volnay. Domaine Blain-Gagnard was founded by Jean-Marc Blain and Claudine Gagnard in the 1980s. Today the domaine cultivates 8 hectares (20 acres) of vineyards planted with a mixture of old and young vines in order to achieve increased complexity in the finished wines. The Chardonnay grapes for the Bâtard-Montrachet grand cru are sourced from three different parcels planted between 1939 and 1986. In addition to its small vineyard holding in Bâtard-Montrachet, Domaine Blain-Gagnard owns plots in Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet and Le Montrachet from which it makes a total of three grand cru white wines.
