He shipped his first wine bottles back to North Europe two years after first moving from Hamburg to Portugal. In 1781 the house bought a farm in the Douro, thereby transitioning from wine shipper to producer, with a greater focus on Port fortified wines. Quinta de São Luiz in the Cima Corgo was purchased in 1922.
