There are 133 hectares (329 acres) of vines at the quinta, that range from 425ft (130m) above sea level at the river's edge to 1740ft (530m) at the top of the ridge. Being so far inland, the diurnal temperature variation is extreme, which means the grapes retain acidity as they ripen. In the winery, grape treading by foot still takes place, a traditional which dates back to the estate's foundation in the early 19th Century. It takes approximately 50 people at least two hours to tread one lagar (a traditional granite, open vat used for grape fermentation). The Vesuvio wine range includes Douro DOC wines as well as Port produced from Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Amarela.
